DEALING WITH INFECTED TATS

DEALING WITH INFECTED TATS

So you’ve finally received that tattoo you’ve been dreaming about for years! As soon as it looks presentable, you rip off the bandages, slap on some moisturizer, and head out to the nearest beach. The next morning you notice that something seems a bit off-kilter with your new body art. If you suspect an infection, you will want to look for the following signs:

1. Excessive swelling or heat radiation: This can be indicative of the start to an infection, as soon as you notice these signs you should take action.

2. Foul smelling discharge from the tattooed area: If you are experiencing any discharge from the area, you should go to the doctor immediately. This is a definite sign of the presence of a serious infection.

3. Muscle aches will generally occur when your infection has become very serious. If this is the case, you will probably need to be put on a regiment of antibiotics.

If you do learn that you have developed an infection, you should visit a doctor. Depending on how serious your infection is, you will most likely be put on a cycle of antibiotics in conjunction with antibiotic ointment application. Remember, if you have been prescribed antibiotics, be sure to finish the entire cycle, even if you are feeling better.
While your infection is healing, be sure to keep the tattooed area very clean. Additionally, keep your tattoo dry and continually apply the antibiotic ointment to the infected area. Do not cover the infected area with a bandage, as this will give the bacteria more opportunity to grow out of control.
